Michael James, cofounder of New York cannabis dispensary, Good Grades.

Michael James

Earlier this month practicing attorney, Michael James, and his cousin, Extasy, made history. Good Grades, their cannabis dispensary in Queens, New York was among the first six retail outlets in New York State. It was also the first to open in Queens, and the first woman-owned dispensary to be financially supported by the state’s social equity investment fund. We sat down with Michael to find out more…

Tell us how the idea to open a dispensary first came about?

The idea took hold organically over our cousins group chat! We had talked before about starting a family business. As an attorney, my specialty is government licensing and relations, specifically in cannabis and alcoholic beverage licensing.

I had been busy assisting several clients with their applications for a Conditional Adult-Use Retail Dispensary license [created to address those most affected by marijuana prohibition; only people who were previously convicted of marijuana-related offenses - and their family members - can apply]. Extasy’s father was deported for a cannabis offence and so she qualified as an applicant. This was the family business as we all had been discussing. It was an easy decision for us to make.

What’s the inspiration behind the name?

Good Grades marries two core competencies of our business: good products and good consumer education. It ties into our community initiatives and in-store experiences that will come in the future. It was also chosen to evoke positive associations with cannabis and help introduce and re-introduce the plant to consumers in a more positive way. In regards to education, it references the grades of cannabis quality (such as AAA, AA, A, etc.) that are commonly used in the industry.

What are the biggest challenges you have faced opening this particular business?

The regulatory hurdles, for sure. Understanding the complex regulations and getting all of our ducks in a row was the most challenging part of the process. It was very helpful to be well-versed in the law and cannabis regulations while navigating the process.

Why is opening a dispensary in Queens so important to you?

Being able to provide jobs, contribute to the local economy and participate in building the same community that I grew up in is a dream materialized. I am now able to help continue the heritage of Queens and provide opportunities for the next generation. This full circle opportunity allows us to be more connected with the needs and wants of the community and truly be a community resource and community advocate in the industry.

What message do you want to send to the cannabis community?

I believe that cannabis has immense potential for both medical and recreational purposes, and I commend the work that we are all doing to create a safe and responsible environment for its use. It is important to prioritize education and responsible consumption, so let us continue to work together to break down stigmas and promote an inclusive and supportive community.
